a portrait of alan cumming

Throughout 2014, the search for Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year took place across the UK and Ireland. Over ten months, a number of shortlisted artists were invited to produce portraits of well-known sitters during six regional heats. After a grand finale at London’s National Portrait Gallery, Gibraltar-born artist Christian Hook was announced as the overall winner, and recipient of a major new commission – to paint a portrait of Alan Cumming for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.

In this film, the artist and the sitter reflect on the collaborative process of creating the portrait, and discuss the significance of the different visual elements that make up the piece.
