Artists Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse spent over six years photographing Ponte City, Johannesburg’s iconic 54-storey apartment building. Since 2007 they have visited the tower repeatedly to document the building and the lives of its residents: from candid portraits of people and views from every window, to shots of every television set in the tower and found material recovered from abandoned apartments. In these videos, filmed during the installation of Ponte City at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the artists discuss the project, the work, and the different stages in Ponte’s history.
