cut and paste | collage before cubism
[2019] Collage is usually attributed to Pablo Picasso and George Braque in the early twentieth century, when Picasso stuck a piece of oilcloth onto his painting, ‘Still-life with Chair Caning’. Although the Cubists are often thought to have invented collage, the story begins much earlier. In Collage Before Cubism, we take a look back and explore how people have been cutting and pasting since the invention of paper.
